ABSTRACT

There are ve national parks in the Southern Colorado Plateau Network that are larger than 100 mi2: Canyon de Chelly National Monument (CACH), El Malpais National Monument (ELMA), Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (GLCA), Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA), and Petried Forest National Park (PEFO). In addition, there are 14 smaller parks, including Mesa Verde National Park (MEVE) and Bandelier National Monument (BAND). Larger parks generally have more available data with which to evaluate air pollution sensitivities and effects. In addition, the larger parks generally contain more extensive resources in need of protection against the adverse impacts of air pollution. This chapter focuses mainly on GRCA, MEVE, and BAND, which have the most complete data regarding air pollution effects within the network. Since air pollutants can be widespread, reduction of pollution emissions affecting large parks will often result in the protection of smaller parks located nearby as well.
