ABSTRACT

This chapter refers to factors that have an influence on the motivation of construction project teams include communication strategies, management styles, training, behaviours and organisational cultures. It summarises the findings of there are significant benefits from construction clients pursuing management initiatives on projects to motivate staff and therein lead to more successful outcomes. The chapter emphases why senior management, including construction clients, should pay special attention to motivational strategies. It identifies the general need for alignment of individual and organisational goals and the aim for win-win scenarios. In addition, the structure of organisations, communication lines, behaviours and the culture that exists can present problems for the motivation levels of site operatives. Construction clients should be aware of the advantages in keeping project teams motivated by encouraging a culture of staff development through training and education. Also, the construction industry has sometimes considered that motivation is not an issue for construction teams, especially those on the lower tiers.
