ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the importance for construction clients of the processes around selection and appointment of their contracting partners. It articulates some of the issues that clients need to be aware of when commencing their selection processes. The chapter focuses predominantly on a research study by S. Taylor, which established what information and methods are available to construction clients to help them to identify and select suitable contracting partners. It describes a number of practices were identified that could help to improve the chances of construction clients selecting reliable and proactive contracting partners. For construction clients to be able to undertake the selection processes for their consultants and main contractors, it is important for them to be able to benchmark each contender against certain criteria. In response to the M. Latham and J. Egan Reports, the UK construction industry has developed its own set of Key Performance Indicator.
