ABSTRACT

Amphetamines, generally referred to as phenylethylamines (Figure 4.1), are the class of compounds with the largest number of individual substances on the illicit drug market. They are abused for their stimulant and/or hallucinogenic effect. Amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) are part of the psychostimulant group of drugs and include meth/amphetamine, ecstasy, cocaine, and some pharmaceuticals, that is, dexamphetamine and ritalin. All stimulants work by increasing dopamine levels in the brain-dopamine is a brain chemical (or neurotransmitter) associated with pleasure, movement, and attention. The therapeutic effect of stimulants is achieved by slow and steady increases of dopamine, which are similar to the natural production
