ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how a number of hospitals have implemented the Shadowing and Patient and Family Centered Care (PFCC) Methodology components of the Patient Centered Value System. It explains how some are using Shadowing and Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing to determine the actual (true) costs of healthcare through the full cycle of care for any medical or surgical condition. Healthcare organizations can move to a culture that promotes patient and family engagement and a practice that fosters it by implementing the Patient Centered Value System. The Working Group formed a Trauma Restructuring Team to close the gaps between the current state and the ideal. To improve the pediatric experience, the Working Group reduced waiting times and introduced a Rapid Access Clinic and specialty multidisciplinary clinics for allergy and asthma. Waste in healthcare has been estimated to account for more than 20 percent of total healthcare costs and could well be higher.
