ABSTRACT

This chapter designs to give a brief history of Lean as well as Lean Six Sigma (LSS) because both methodologies are used in it. LSS can be used in any industry to include finance, construction, government, health care, insurance and hospitality. LSS is about increasing quality and profit. LSS largely depends on the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) model that was developed by Motorola and later enhanced by General Electric. It uses the martial arts designations—white, yellow, green, black, and master black belts—to denote the level of expertise. The Yellow Belt (YB)s are expected to improve processes in their own day-to-day work and to provide support to LSS Green Belt (GB)s and LSS Blue Belt (BB)s. LSS GB training and certification is more defined than LSS YB programs. The roles, responsibilities, and education for LSS GBs and BBs are the most consistent.
