ABSTRACT

In this chapter, from a simulation point of view, we consider the modeling of magnetic particles with a variety of shapes. With an educational objective, we focus on the simpler models that are fully applicable to actual particle-based simulations, and moreover the following treatment of these models is intended to provide the reader with a valuable insight into the methodology for developing their own, more sophisticated magnetic particle models. In the following, we fi rst show the modeling of different types of magnetic particles and then explain the expressions of the energies, forces and torques that arise from the interactions between the particles themselves and between the particles and an external magnetic fi eld. In order to help the reader to develop an understanding of the attractive and the repulsive interactions acting between the dispersion particles, we will discuss the potential curves for various cases of a twoparticle confi guration. This is also a signifi cant aid for analyzing the aggregate structures of magnetic particles in both the situations of an applied magnetic fi eld and an external fl ow fi eld.
