ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the opportunities for geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial technology to be deployed as the solution of choice for the measurement, tracking, monitoring and reporting of sustainability and resilience in local government. Effective techniques for managing, monitoring and measuring sustainability and resilience will become ever more important. A resilient community has the capacity to absorb events, shocks and traumas that strike its social, economic, technical and infrastructure systems while maintaining essentially the same functions, structures and systems. Local governments are starting to understand the economic benefits of sustainability. The noble practice of managing sustainability and resilience in local government is still likely seen by elected officials as similar to any other geospatial undertaking. GIS and geospatial science will guide towns, cities and counties down the road to sustainability and resilience. A new framework for evaluation will help identify the areas most in need of sustainability measures.
