ABSTRACT

Eco-engineered bioreactors (EEBs) Systems are designed in manners similar to those used for designing passive treatment wastewater treatment systems and mechanical wastewater treatment plants. The kinetic and other scale-up parameters needed to design EEBs should be determined during pilot-scale treatability testing, either at an on-site location or at a central EEB test facility. Treatability testing is almost always recommended as an early stage in EEB System project development. To design an EEB, a hydraulic mass balance must be performed in order to define the water flow rate used in determining how big it needs to be. When designing pilot-scale EEB cells for treatability tests, and even smaller commercial-scale ones, provision has to be made internally to prevent wall effects. Pond models may be used to size simple Pond Wetlands that might form primary or tertiary treatment cells in EEB Systems. Modern EEB design is carried out using chemical engineering models based on Reaction Kinetics.
