ABSTRACT
I had initially titled this chapter “Word segmentation in Chinese,” since the original word segmentation problem was aimed towards Chinese. As a generic problem, however, word segmentation has applications in many Asian languages (e.g., Japanese, Korean, Thai), as well as in syntax analysis of phonetic languages (e.g., English, French). Thus, the Chinese word segmentation we introduce here is only an example to illustrate the overarching problem.
