ABSTRACT

One of the foundations to engagement and creativity is the concept of Monozukuri. Monozukuri is a term that was used well before modern industrialization, when people had the skills to envision something and then turn that vision into reality. While the literal translation of Monozukuri is "making things" (mono: parts, objects, things; zukuri: making), the spirit behind the word holds so much more meaning. The idea of Monozukuri is having the ability to own your craft as a professional and continue to change with the times, and improve and innovate skillsets. Frederick Herzberg's studies on organizations, which would come to be known as the two-factor theory, came to a remarkably similar conclusion, but Herzberg grouped the findings into two categories: satisfiers, which are motivating, and dissatisfiers, which are demotivating. Tapping into the creative potential of the human mind, the true meaning of Kaizen, is essential to creating that sort of engagement.
