ABSTRACT

Sri Lanka is an island nation located in the tropics, lying off the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent. The primary reason in the Sri Lankan traditional medicinal system behind making dried forms of herbs was for easing the method of preparation. Most of the methods of treatment and remedies have not been systematically documented in the traditional medicinal system of Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan traditional medicinal system has gradually developed towards approaching the scientific realms for recognition, although the appreciation and consumerism still lies mostly among the local populations. In comparison with traditional Indian or Chinese herbal medicinal systems, the Sri Lankan traditional medicinal system has more unexplored territories that are open for research, since there are few systematic scientific studies on the traditional remedies. The traditional medicinal system has received many accolades over many decades as an effective therapeutic means of remedying and sometimes preventing many disease conditions.
