ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the public debate and evaluates proposed solutions to the Global Climate Change (GCC) problem. The politicization of GCC has caused people to base their opinions and decisions on emotions rather than facts and logic. The spread of misinformation by oil companies has delayed political action on global warming for decades. In contrast to oil companies, the insurance industry has accepted the reality of GCC and is actively lobbying Congress to enact legislation to fight GCC. Insurance companies will be among the first to pay the consequences of climate change, they are less likely to let ideology compromise the accuracy of their risk assessments. In recent years, experiments and studies in social psychology have shown that, when it comes to complex issues such as climate change, people tend to think with their emotional brain rather than their rational brain. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) aims to immobilize carbon dioxide deep in the Earth, isolating it from the atmosphere.
