ABSTRACT

F. N. David recalled Betty 'was helpful and supportive to all graduate students, paying particular attention to young women going to their first employment'. Eight students are known to have completed their PhD degrees under Betty, with research areas in mathematical statistics, biostatistics, demography, or education. Dennis Pearl was one of Betty's successful doctoral students. His research interests included the statistical analysis of nucleotide sequences and phylogenetic trees, simulation-based estimation, statistical education, modeling biological phenomena, and problems in clinical and translational research. Brian Yandell was one of Betty's successful mentees. Yandell recalled Betty was highly regarded by the students for her studies of the equality of women in academe. Betty gave her life to the UC-Berkeley statistics department. Betty's act of generosity became a lifelong memory for Doksum and others. Pearl described Betty's personality as folksy. Pearl recalled Betty as a person with high political acumen.
