ABSTRACT

On June 4, 1970, Betty and the members of the Policy CSAW held a news conference. Sanford Kadish, chair of the senate policy committee that commissioned production of the Report of the Subcommittee on the Status of Academic Women on the Berkeley Campus, also participated. Betty and the participants explained the recommendations to upgrade the status of academic women. Betty sent a copy to Margaret Thal-Larsen, president of the WFC, who was particularly interested in improving the status of women like her in research units. Betty took great trouble to correct misconceptions about women. An example, expressed by a biochemistry professor, was that women graduate students were much less likely than men to obtain the PhD. The biochemistry department upheld this false impression as a justification for imposing a quota on the number of women admits to the graduate program. Betty usually found the professor to be a very forward-looking person, a good scholar, and committed to educational excellence.
