ABSTRACT

HEW investigators were expected at the start of summer. They would investigate the complaints about academic women (month one) and nonacademic women (month two). LAW called for specific suggestions from women for an affirmative action plan which they expected HEW to develop by the end of the summer. Betty was well connected with influential women in astronomy; many knew of her work to support academic women. Two committees met throughout the spring semester to consider the future of the two faculty clubs. One was the WFC's Committee of Five; the other also incorporated three members of the men's club. The WFG was continuing to monitor moves, or lack thereof, toward equality for women. The VCAA had taken many constructive steps during the hiring freeze. Back in June, the chancellor knew academic women were bringing their grievances to Betty and her colleagues in the WFG.
