ABSTRACT

Academic women were exchanging information about victories at different universities around the country. The HEW investigation at UC-Berkeley was continuing. In August, investigators asked for bibliographies. In late August, academic women got 'significantly' more help from the federal government. Federal non-construction contractors and subcontractors now were required to analyze their workforces for underutilization of women. The HEW investigation was indicating UC-Berkeley had 'a disproportionately high number of women at the lower levels'. The planned center for continuing education for women was being actively supported by the administration, which hoped it would stimulate research activities related to renewed education. The Chancellor's CSAW and Chancellor's CSNAW would follow up on recommendations made by the Policy CSAW. At the beginning of October, the AAAS was planning a 'Symposium on Women in Academia: Evolving Policies Toward Equal Opportunities' to be part of their 138th annual meeting to be held on December 30 in Philadelphia.
