ABSTRACT

The year 1974 was busy in terms of women's issues. At the turn of the year, Betty was immersed in salary equity analyses. She wanted to make sure her work influenced affirmative action efforts on the Berkeley campus. Betty accepted speaking engagements at all levels. At one end of the spectrum, she spoke to national and international audiences of professionals. Founded in 1915, the AAUP 'has helped to shape American higher education by developing the standards and procedures that maintain quality in education and academic freedom in this country's colleges and universities'. Betty had been critical of the figures for underutilization of women and minorities being used in the most recent draft affirmative action plan for UC- Berkeley. In mid February, Betty decided to share her Application paper with Helen Astin and Alan Bayer, urging them to continue their regression work on gender equity in salaries using more recent data.
