ABSTRACT

In April 1974, the VC sent Betty three copies of the 'Academic Personnel Listing in Title Code Sequence' (PER 221) for October 31, 1973. She was away in Warsaw, Poland. The CCHE report on opportunities for women in academe was being widely read across the nation. Betty was serving with Clark Kerr on the UC-Berkeley academic senate committee on educational policy and had just seen him over the summer. The May SWEM report to the academic senate was all about salary equity. The academic senate decided immediately to establish the 'Special Committee on Salary Equity' (SEC). Betty also had problems with the departmental reviews in the affirmative action reports. She wanted to know why so few departments were reviewed. Affirmative action had become an overarching issue at UC. Campuses had been directed to maintain academic personnel records that could be used for reporting.
