ABSTRACT

The influence of the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the International Project Management Association is present in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) guidance document as an effort to ensure some degree of alignment. This chapter highlights the parts of ISO 21500 that are relevant to the offered solution and the proposed methodological approach. Various standard organizations from around the world participated in the development of ISO 21500. The ISO Guidance on Project Management presents the concept of process groups. The ISO 21500 process groups are initiating, planning, implementing, controlling, and closing. The process groups' origin is founded in the principles of total quality management, in particular, the Deming Cycle of Plan-Do-Check-Act. ISO 21500 refers to the project management functions, what the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide calls knowledge areas, as subjects. The PMBOK Guide, as a book, includes the ANSI-approved project management standard advocated by PMI.
