ABSTRACT

This chapter explores one of the core reasons for developing the Customizable and Adaptable Methodology for Managing Projects. It presents the challenges that are the most common areas of confusion in the project management community among practitioners who subscribe to process groups concepts, which are addressed in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 21500. One of the critical gaps in practice is the confusion between the process groups and project life cycle. The cause of the confusion is not an error in the guides, as both the PMBOK Guide and ISO 21500 are clear that the process groups are not project phases. The guides also stress that the project life cycle is a variable, a function of domain and industry, whereas the process groups are the same across different types of projects. In other words, the confusion is not limited to terminology, but to the practice.
