ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an abundance of valuable first-hand information about the profile of portunid crabs. Carapace of the crabs of portunidae subfamily is subhexagonal; rarely subcircular; and is usually distinctly broader than long. This species was found to display the typical reproductive features and spawning pattern of temperate portunid crabs in spite of its short life-span. Carapace of the crabs of this subfamily are only moderately wide and not obviously convex in both directions. Eyestalks are of normal length. There are 4–5 anterolateral teeth. Orbits are small and their upper margin is with two closed fissures and one straight and narrow below the external angle. Lower orbital border is not visible throughout its length from dorsal view. The species has a polygonal shell. In the face, it has 4 teeth and anterolateral edge has 5 teeth which are much larger and connected to the opposite edge by a transverse hull.
