ABSTRACT

The term pathogenesis means the chain of events leading to the disease due to a series of changes in the structure or function of a cell/tissue/organ being used by a microbial, chemical, or physical agent. The pathogenesis of a disease is the mechanism by which an etiological factor causes the disease. Water-soaking is the first symptom of bacterial infection. The EPS induces a water-soaking reaction in the host plant, which creates humidity in the host tissue for bacterial multiplication. In a pathogen–host combination, the first surface with which the organism comes in contact is the cuticle and cell wall of the plant. The cuticle is comprised of a complex wax, cutin, which impregnates the cellulose wall. Toxins may act directly on living host cells, damaging or even killing the host and are implicated in plant diseases. Some toxins are active on a wide range of plant species or on a specific host species.
