ABSTRACT

In the real world, man builds a coherent representation based on all the sensory stimuli received. In the virtual world, users will therefore seek to interpret coherently what they perceive based on their experience in the real world, despite the sensorimotor discrepancies:

– Between several senses (for example locomotion on a treadmill resulting in a discrepancy between the vision and vestibular systems, Figure 8.1);

– Between the senses and motor responses (when manipulating virtual objects without force feedback, meaning users have no sensation of their weight, for instance).
