ABSTRACT
Flight examiners use the documentary method of interpretation. In this method, an observation is treated as the manifestation of an underlying human factor that in itself is inaccessible (e.g., situation awareness, decision-making). A form of circular reasoning emerges because an observation, constituting the objective sense, leads to postulating the documentary sense, which, in turn, is taken as the source of the behavior observed.
