ABSTRACT
China’s overarching computer-related goal is to greatly enhance its capability to provide systems and equipment for the “informationization” of the national economy. Computerization of China’s economy and its business practices is progressing rapidly, backed by government planning and financial and regulatory support. China’s information electronics industry has made tremendous progress in the 1990s, especially in integrated circuits, software development, Chinese-language operating system software, and mobile communications; there is some distance to go to catch up. Since the 1980s, the rapid development and diffusion of information and communications technologies and products around the world has provided a huge growth opportunity for the Chinese personal computer industry. The Nanjing-based Tontru Information Industrial Group is part of the key Information Industrial Group for China’s Ministry of Electronics Industry. Government spending on building the national information infrastructure and the increasing number of people owning personal computers indicate a large potential market waiting for software manufacturers to explore.
