ABSTRACT

PTC elements are heating elements which have a resistance that increases substantially with increasing temperature. The ceramic PTC element has two metal-coated parallel surfaces that are connected to the external leads. The element is normally electrically insulated and enveloped by a metallic enclosure, which ensures good heat dissipation and an even surface temperature. The temperature for the parts of the PTC element closest to the heat-dissipating surface will be lower than for the parts farther away from this surface. The PTC element may also be used in fan heaters or for heating of streaming air for any similar purpose. PTC elements of BaTiO3 have a very high resisitivity and are suitable where a small element is supplied with a high voltage at a low rating that results in a high resistance. A cable consisting of two parallel copper wires embedded in a polymer PTC material can be used for frost protection.
