ABSTRACT

It is important to separate the logical connection of a LAN from the physical connection seen in the cabling system. Local area net­ works are sometimes designed to work in a ‘bus’ fashion, for example the first version of Ethernet where all users plugged into a length of coaxial cable and used it as a common bus. Some LANs worked as a loop or ring, for example Token Ring and FDDI, and they still work that way even when connected via conventional structured cabling in a ‘star-wired’ manner. Figure 3.1 shows the original Ethernet bus structure and Fig. 3.2 shows a ring structure.
