ABSTRACT
In the first structural engineering application of neural networks published in an archival journal, Adeli and Yeh (1989) presented a model of machine learning in engineering design based on the concept of self-adjustment of internal control parameters and perceptron. The problem of structural design was cast in a form to be described by a perceptron without hidden layers.
