ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a general discussion on the most significant aspects to observe regarding harmonic measurements. Decisive efforts to control harmonic currents within industry limits before they converge at and disturb distribution substation monitoring equipment must be undertaken. An even more delicate problem arises when a customer generates significant harmonic waveform distortion that affects adjacent utility customers. It is understandable that the main location where measurements are to be conducted is the customer-utility interface. Other instances in which harmonic measurements would be required are when studies are conducted to determine the reasons for abnormal operation or premature failure of equipment, unexpected relay protection tripping, or excessive telephone interference. Harmonics and lamp flicker increase with the use of power electronic devices in the system and create problems for loads susceptible to power quality problems. Harmonic measurements at specific customer sites may provide valuable information to determine compliance of end users with standards.
