ABSTRACT
Most of the technologies discussed in this book show great promise for laser-based explosives detection in a laboratory environment. However, transitioning these technologies outside the laboratory requires a careful and practical analysis of the engineering complexity, cost, and potential safety/environmental considerations, as well as the public perception of the safe use of lasers. This chapter is intended to provide the reader with a general overview of these considerations in order to provide a better understanding of the complexities involved with developing and elding a laserbased system for standoff explosives detection.
