ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter, we presented SPEF for a power system with classical generator models and nonlinear voltage-dependent load models with examples and case studies on the two IEEE test systems-17-generator and 50-generator systems. We also considered the extension of SPEF for one-axis generator models with flux decay. In this chapter, we will consider detailed generator models with two-axis machine models and excitation control systems with AVR. The formulations of SPEF will be presented in different ways and aimed at simplifying the computations in practical systems. The role of dynamic loads such as induction motors on voltage stability is emphasized. We will also outline a composite framework for synchronous and voltage stability using energy functions. The applications of SPEF will be illustrated using several examples and a case study of the New England 10-generator system.
