ABSTRACT

Health is a pervasive and driving force in our lives. Although we frequently don’t fully appreciate the value of good health until it has been compromised, our health enables or disables nearly every other aspect of our lives. In addition, we increasingly look to the health care system to help us maintain a level of health that allows us to remain active and engaged in our lives. We view health care as an important social good, some would argue even a basic right, and we are generally supportive of medical research and advances in medical technology (Bennett-Woods 2007).2
