ABSTRACT

The thesis that our planet acts like a giant living organism in which all living things interact to maintain a certain stability, through many feedback systems, that individuals and species unknowingly play a part in this interaction, and that living things are not passive but active agents that can change the environment. Gaia is the Greek goddess of the Earth. J. Lovelock and L. Margulis proposed the hypothesis, which has been widely discussed during the past 25 years.
