ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book addresses emergence of the Multicore era from the challenging perspective of on-chip communication. Moreover, as stated in this book, a further revolutionary shift will occur soon towards advanced on-chip communication components that the people defined as Interconnect Processing Units (IPUs). In addition, the capability to monitor the system state, e.g. traffic load, latency, core power state, security attacks, and system error conditions in all chip regions can enable efficient centralized or distributed resource management, as described below. As far as tools are concerned, the people have dedicated a great effort in modeling methodology and simulation of on-chip communication networks by developing the open-source On-Chip Communication Network framework. The goal is to guarantee the best optimized performance in terms of area and operating frequency, independent of the selected IPU configuration and extension.
