ABSTRACT

As depicted in Figure 2.1, a generic process sensor determines the current state of the process from one or more physical observables, which by definition are physical quantities that can be directly measured. Physical observables include temperature, frequency, light intensity, speed, and so forth. The sensor uses these inputs to produce a measurement, which may be a simple number (e.g., the local temperature) or a more complex data set such as an image.
