The phosphor for fluorescent lamps is excited primarily by the 254-nm Hg resonance line. Therefore, the phosphor must absorb this radiation strongly, and convert it into fluorescence efficiently. Since the advent of the three-band fluorescent lamp, however, high-load fluorescent lamps (lamps with a smaller diameter or compact lamps) are becoming popular, and excitation by 185-nm radiation is also becoming important.29
