9.2 Luminous paints There are two basic types of luminous paints: radioluminous paints and phosphorescent paints. Phosphorescent paints glow in the dark for a given duration after absorption of light, such as sunlight or electric lamp light. This absorption-emission cycle can be repeated many times. Consequently, it is only appropriate to use phosphorescent paints in locations where there is an excitation light source. However, radioluminous paints are capable of continuous light emission without an extraneous energy source because they contain radioisotopes that provide a constant source of energy to excite the phosphor continuously.
