ABSTRACT
PBG-based lasers will be among the first devices that will find their way to the market. They will be accompanied by PBG-based waveguides and PBG-based passive components, such as filters, benders, and splitters. Industry observers expect that the first PBG-based commercial system will be an optical spectrometer and a set of chemical and biological microsensors. At the same time, the telecom industry will start to use PBG-based add-drop filters and Mach-Zehnder interferometers.
