ABSTRACT

Petrovskii 1999). A comprehensive discussion of this technology is the focus of this chapter. We begin by

describing the physical mechanism of ion exchange, the types of substrates in common use, and the

various processing configurations by which the exchange has been accomplished (Section 13.2). Section

13.3 contains a discussion of the modeling of these processes, which in general will require numerical

methods to solve for the index distributions. Several important optical properties of ion-exchanged

waveguides are investigated in Section 13.4. Finally, in Section 13.5, novel functionality in ion-exchanged

specialty glasses is discussed, and examples of devices that utilize the unique properties of this technology

are given.
