Electronic Displays book
This chapter addresses the essential elements of display technology. Displays are the primary
communication link between a variety of electronic devices and the ultimate consumer of information,
the human being. An enormous variety of display devices have been developed over the years to fill many
different needs. These range from the small, low-information content devices found in Personal
Information Managers (PIMs), hand-held calculators, and games to the exotic and expensive
mammoth displays used in command and control situations or in outdoor stadiums. Important
devices are those optimized for television viewing in the home and those capable of reproducing one
or more pages of text and graphics, such as used in personal computers, terminals and workstations.
Specialized or “niche markets” include helmet-mounted, head-up displays (HUDs) and very high-
resolution displays for viewing radiographic images.
