ABSTRACT

One of the few attempts to numerically model snap loads in mooring cables is due to Vassalos & Kourouklis (1998). They used a numerical model based on the lumped mass method and evaluated its performance by comparing with experiments by Fylling and Wold (1979). Good results were obtained for cases with smooth dynamic response, but errors up to 30% were noted for cases with snap loads. As standard design procedures-such as POSMOOR (DNVGL 2013)—rely on partial safety factors on computed loads it is obvious that the accuracy of numerical tools should be increased in the presence of snap loads.
