ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how to determine the Fourier series of a periodic function over any range. In communications, the Fourier series is essential to understanding how a signal behaves when it passes through filters, amplifiers and communications channels. In astronomy, radar and digital signal processing Fourier analysis is used to map the planet. In geology, seismic research uses Fourier analysis, and in optics, Fourier analysis is used in light diffraction. Hence a function may be expanded in a series of either cosine terms or sine terms only that is a half-range Fourier series. A half-range Fourier cosine series indicates an even function. A half-range Fourier sine series indicates an odd function.
