ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of a 19-year-old male who is brought in to the Emergency Department in a critical condition after his family found him to be confused. The patient's father reports that he found empty packets of medications in his son's room including an antidepressant. His parents mentioned that he has recently been keeping to himself, not attending university classes or socialising with friends. The history and examination findings in this patient are suggestive of a tricyclic antidepressant overdose. Over 50" of suicidal overdoses involve more than one medication and are often taken with alcohol. The patient should be observed if he or she develops concerning symptoms such as respiratory depression, palpitation or dizziness. Mild gastrointestinal upset is expected in most cases. The National Poisons Information Service (NPIS) provides assistance, and it is advisable to contact them if considering discharge of a high-risk individual.
