ABSTRACT

This chapter considers following virtual machine (VM) risks that can produce unacceptable user service quality for applications hosted on impacted virtual machine instances: VM dead on arrival (DOA) risk; VM premature release risk; VM stall risk; VM scheduling latency risk; VM clock error risk; and VM placement policy violation risk. The chapter provides virtual infrastructure as a service product in the context of the network functions virtualization (NFV) architecture. Cloud service customers are service consumers of virtual compute, memory, storage, and networking services to host their VNFs. Infrastructure Cloud service provider (CSP) are service providers of virtual compute, memory, storage, and networking services, and the NFV architecture defines the Vn-Nf reference point as the demark between a consumer and a provider for infrastructure services. European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) NFV Service Quality Metrics includes several useful virtual machine service quality metrics. The chapter visualizes virtual machine quality metrics from across the virtual machine's life cycle.
