ABSTRACT

Application services rely on persistent storage to host user data, configuration information, and other application information elements. Cloud-based applications typically rely on virtual storage services of cloud service providers to host their persistent data. Virtual storage presents the following user service quality risks: storage access reliability risk; storage access latency; volume capacity risk; volume outage risk; and volume throughput risk. Virtual storage service is delivered by infrastructure cloud service providers to host user data, configuration information, and other application information elements. Storage risks are usefully factored into those affecting an entire storage volume versus risks that manifest against individual files or records. Risks related to individual storage/file operations: storage access reliability risk, and storage access latency. Risks related to entire storage volumes: volume capacity risk, volume outage risk, and volume throughput risk.
