ABSTRACT

The service design and service transition phases must execute faster to accelerate the pace of service innovation, and costs must be squeezed out of service operations—as well as service design and service transition—to reduce operating expenses. As cloud service customers (CSCs) accelerate their pace of innovation, and especially as they adopt Agile and DevOps methods, these phases will overlap more and more. This chapter considers how the development/deployment cycle time can be accelerated by the cloud and how operational efficiencies can be improved in the application service life cycle for cloud-based application services. It considers cloud changes enabling application service life cycle improvements, and also how those changes map onto standard system life cycle activities. The chapter explores application life cycle processes likely to accelerate the pace of service innovation via cloud computing and application life cycle processes likely to improve operational efficiency via cloud computing.
