ABSTRACT

Common approaches utilize the notion that "one college credit" corresponds to a class meeting one hour per week over a period of about 14 weeks. For example, at many colleges and universities, a typical course might earn 3 or 4 credits. As curricula have evolved over the years for common courses, many traditional courses fit within a standard format that meets 3 or 4 times per week. However, in several settings, 1-credit and 2-credit courses may be natural. Effectively the 4-credit course consisted of two 2-credit courses that had common tests and a single, unified semester grade. Although courses for modest credit should not attempt to cover the full range of content for 4-credit courses, modest courses can provide students with a moderate level of background. Faculty may be able to develop or revise 1-credit or 2-credit courses relatively easily, allowing these small courses to connect well with new advances in the field.
