ABSTRACT

Internationally, "computing" seems a rather inclusive term. To complement the goals and content discussed by Tony Ralson and Peter Henderson, it seems worthwhile to remind readers of additional goals for mathematics that were identified by the Pedagogy Focus Group on Supporting Courses in the development of Computing Curricula 2001. In the 1980s, many mathematicians observed that the list of topics in calculus courses had gradually expanded over the years, so the 1980s courses often had a new topic each day. In particular, there is a significant danger that students will view separate mathematics courses as being unrelated to computing, unless the mathematical concepts and techniques are used repeatedly in computer science courses. Computing students will need to take mathematics to support their interests, but few students will have the time and interest to take all the mathematics that might be useful in some area of computing.
