ABSTRACT

Effective teaching develops through an evolutionary process that involves observations of what works for an individual instructor in a specific environment, feedback from students, other faculty, and observers, on-going study of teaching and student learning, brainstorming with educators about common problems and possible approaches, etc. Even with the contrasting styles within the classroom, some characteristics seem common for many effective teachers. The chapter discusses the details of connecting classroom planning, pedagogy and practices to the big picture. It talks about creating a supportive classroom environment, developing one's own teaching style, student-instructor interactions, pace and level of discussion, as well as selecting and presenting examples.
